 わたしたち三人は、小さな庭も作りました。努力のわりには報われることは少なかったのですが、わたしたちはとてもそれが自慢でした。花壇にベンケイソウを植えました。自分たちだけが成長できるのだと言わんばかりにベンケイソウは大きくなりました。そして、結局、そのとおりになったのです。ニンジン、オ

あらまぁ。どれも普通に栽培される植物たちなのですが・・・。作者モンゴメリは、子供のころから植物や花に興味があったようです。この経験が『アンシリーズ」の植物描写に役立ちました。 植物の世話は、やり過ぎても足りなくてもうまくいきません。 「水遣り三年」・・・あまりに手を掛け過ぎたので、かえって失敗してしまったのでしょう。この経験が、次のディヴィーの行動に結びつきました。 出てきた芽を「たった６本しか引っこ抜いていない」と不思議に思うディヴィー。 １０年後、立派な農夫になって、グリーンゲイブルスを支える存在となるなど、誰が想像しえたでしょう。 |
